Drained triaxial testing of shales: insight from the Opalinus Clay

چکیده

The investigation of the mechanical behaviour swelling claystones and shales is challenging because their very low permeability high sensitivity to changes in water content. former makes it difficult carry out triaxial tests with controlled homogeneous pore pressure fields, latter results some possible effects when unsaturated extracted specimens are re-saturated prior being tested. This work presents data from drained performed on Opalinus Clay, designated as host rock for radioactive waste disposal Switzerland, at shallow depth close city Lausen. compared those recently published undrained same place, also two sets recent independently obtained Clay sourced greater Mt Terri Underground Research Laboratory. By comparing our Lausen specific which has been prevented, quite a good comparability shear strength observed confining effective stresses larger than 5–6 MPa. related small magnitude occurring above this stress during specimen hydration tests. question linearity criterion discussed respect both other ones. Preferred Orientations and Anisotropy in Shales: Callovo-oxfordian Shale (france) and Opalinus Clay (switzerland)

Anisotropy in clay-rich sedimentary rocks is receiving increasing attention. Seismic anisotropy is essential in the prospecting for petroleum deposits. Anisotropy of diffusion has become relevant for environmental contaminants, including nuclear waste. In both cases, the orientation of component minerals is a critical ingredient and, largely because of small grain size and poor crystallinity, t...

Assessing strategies to mitigate phosphorus leaching from drained clay soils

Assessing mitigation of phosphorus (P) leaching from subsurface drainage systems is challenging due to high spatial and temporal variation in leaching. Mean measured total P leaching from a clayey soil in an eight-year study period (four replicates per treatment) was (kg ha-1 year-1): 1.21 from shallow autumn tillage (ShT), 0.84 from unfertilised fallow (UF), 0.81 from conventional autumn ploug...

Preliminary laboratory thermo - hydro - mechanical characterization of Opalinus clay

1 INSTRODUCTION In the concept of geological radioactive waste disposal, argillite is being considered as a possible host rock in various countries such as France and Switzerland. This material is chosen thanks to its extremely low permeability that is required to limit the transfer of radioactive elements from the waste package towards the environment. During the construction and exploitation ...

Main features of mudslides in tectonised highly fissured clay shales

Mudslides are widespread in the world, especially in areas occupied by highly-fissured plastic stiff clays. Despite their strong impact on structures, infrastructures and, in general, human activity, the knowledge concerning the causes and mechanisms of mudslides is still rather limited. The paper reports some results of long-term research on mudslides in tectonised highlyfissured plastic clay ...

An Insight into the Fluid Retention Capabilities of Shales

SUMMARY The hydro-mechanical behaviour of shales is becoming one of the most important issues in modern geomechanics, largely driven by petroleum industries (i.e., the extraction of shale gas), the sequestration of CO2 and the nuclear waste geological storage. In any such application, a deep understanding of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of the involved materials is of primary significance. Th...
